Learning and development

Increasing our leadership capability is a key priority. To ensure that we have leaders for today as well as for the future, we have nearly doubled our investment in leadership development across our business. A continuing theme in our leadership development programmes is the responsibility of each individual to recognise that their actions have implications for the long-term success of our business and the markets in which we operate.

Our key bespoke leadership effectiveness programme provides one-on-one coaching and team support for all leaders, facilitated by qualified internal leadership coaches. In 2010, our coaches supported over 160 leaders and 30 senior teams and provided targeted coaching for newly hired senior leaders.

More than ever, we are obliged to demonstrate to governments, regulators and shareholders that our Board of directors and Group Management Committee have the necessary collective skills and experience to be able to lead Standard Chartered. The confidence that our external stakeholders have in us was highlighted in 2010 when Peter Sands, our Group Chief Executive, was invited to accompany the UK Prime Minister to Korea for the G20 Summit, and to provide Standard Chartered’s thought leadership on the future of global financial services.
